NIO Has Now Produced 800,000 Electric Vehicles

Showing just how far the company has come, Chinese smart EV company NIO just announced that it has now produced its 800,000th electric vehicle. (Of course, it has produced zero non-electric vehicles.)
While it is yet to turn a profit, it is notable that the company plans to reach profitability this year. Also, no matter what the future brings, the fact is that NIO has put hundreds of thousands of electric vehicles on the road, and it is almost certain to reach the 1 million vehicle milestone soon-ish. At its current rate of vehicle sales, the company is on track to reach that huge milestone in early 2026.
The 800,000th NIO vehicle was produced in NIO Factory One in Hefei. Though, it wasn’t a NIO-branded vehicle. It was an ONVO L90. Pre-orders of the L90 just began on July 10. The company had the following to say about the ONVO L90 in its latest announcement on the production milestone:
“The 800,000th vehicle is an ONVO L90. Since the pre-order started on July 10, the L90 has received widespread interest and recognition from users and the market. Built upon NIO’s ten years of investment in the charging and swapping infrastructure, as well as continuous technological innovation, the L90 redefines the family-oriented three-row electric SUV by tackling two major user pain points: charging anxiety and space anxiety. The test drives for the L90 officially began on July 23. Nearly 600 test drive cars are now available at over 400 ONVO stores and showrooms in 140 cities in China. The L90 will be officially launched on July 31, with deliveries starting August 1.”
I guess it’s fitting that this milestone vehicle was the company’s next top model. “This 800,000 production milestone starts a new chapter for NIO. The company remains committed to continuous innovation, ultimate products, and beyond-expectation services. One step at a time, it is steadily advancing toward its next milestone: one million vehicles,” the company noted.
The ONVO L90 could be a big hit in China, and beyond. It is a popular vehicle size, features the latest tech, and can compete with practically any vehicle in its class. I expect to see it fighting for a place in China’s EV top 20. Though, of course, the Chinese EV market is extremely competitive and no model is guaranteed a top 20 placement (especially if it’s not a BYD, a low-cost Tesla, or a Xiaomi). But perhaps the ONVO L90 could challenge for a spot there. For more on the hot new model, see: “NIO Looks to Shatter 3-Row SUV Market with ONVO L90.” But here’s the core summary of why it should be so competitive: “NIO indicates that it is a high-end model, but the starting price for the large SUV is just RMB 279,900 (~$39,000). You can also buy it with the Battery as a Service (BaaS) option, with a starting price of RMB 193,900 (~$27,000). NIO argues that the ONVO L90 ‘redefines value’ in its vehicle class.” Given the features and specs it offers, and how appealing the L90 looks, it sure does look like the price is an absolute steal. Of course, that’s just in the Chinese EV market, where price wars are the norm and there are dozens more highly compelling EV options than in the US EV market. Even so, I think the L90 can compete at a high level there. We will see.
Overall, it’s just exciting to see the Chinese EV company continue to reach big milestones, continue to innovate, and continue to live its best life. “This milestone reflects the remarkable progress of China’s automotive industry in technology and innovation, and underscores NIO’s decade-long dedication to building full-stack capabilities,” NIO commented.
